Recognising and treating pain in laboratory animals is both an ethical requirement and a scientific necessity. Unmanaged pain confounds experimental results and causes avoidable suffering.
Laboratory animal pain management has improved significantly with the development of validated species-specific pain assessment tools. The Mouse Grimace Scale allows rapid, reliable pain scoring from facial expressions. However, despite legal requirements, pain is still frequently undertreated in laboratory settings due to lack of training, concern about confounding experimental results, and resource constraints. Unmanaged pain causes suffering, distress, and physiological stress responses that themselves confound experimental data - making pain management both a welfare imperative and a scientific necessity.
