Stocking density in broiler chicken production directly affects welfare through mobility, resource access, air quality, and social behaviour. Current legal maximums are insufficient for good welfare.
Broiler stocking density is a fundamental welfare determinant. At maximum commercial densities, the floor is carpeted with chickens - individual movement is severely restricted. Ventilation challenges increase with density, raising ammonia and CO2 concentrations. Higher density increases competition for feeders and drinkers. Birds in the centre of sheds have limited access to light and cool air. Hock burn and foot pad dermatitis - which cause chronic pain - increase with density. The Better Chicken Commitment maximum of 30kg/m2, while still high, represents a meaningful improvement on the legal maximum.
