Dairy calf welfare begins at birth with colostrum management - calves that receive inadequate colostrum have higher disease susceptibility and poorer lifetime welfare. Social housing with other calves allows play, mutual grooming, and normal social development. Individual housing in hutches prevents social contact and causes documented frustration and stereotypic behaviour. Weaning is a critical stress point - abrupt weaning causes distress vocalisation, reduced feeding, and physiological stress. Step-down weaning methods and the provision of solid feed from an early age reduce weaning stress. These improvements also have commercial benefits through improved calf health and performance.
