Robotic milking introduces a novel welfare trade-off. Cow autonomy in choosing milking time is a genuine welfare benefit - cows can approach the robot according to their own biological rhythm rather than being gathered and milked at fixed times. Automatic monitoring of milking frequency, yield, and conductivity enables earlier detection of health problems including mastitis. However, robot farms frequently have higher stocking densities and continuous housing without pasture access. The welfare benefits of autonomy must be balanced against the welfare costs of higher-density confinement environments.
