Beekeeping practices significantly affect colony welfare. Evidence-based best practice combines good hive management with respect for colony integrity and bee behaviour.
Beekeeping welfare encompasses both individual bee welfare and colony-level wellbeing. Varroa mite infestation untreated causes individual bee suffering through feeding on fat body and disease transmission, and colony-level collapse killing tens of thousands of bees. Under-treating Varroa out of preference for 'natural' beekeeping causes significant avoidable suffering. Removing too much honey leaves colonies without adequate winter provisions. Rough handling, excessive smoke use, and frequent colony disturbance cause acute stress. Well-managed colonies with appropriate treatment, adequate food stores, and minimal disturbance represent genuinely welfare-positive beekeeping.
