Farmed deer occupy an unusual position between wild and fully domesticated animals. Their welfare needs reflect their wild origins and require management approaches that respect their nature.
Deer are prey animals with powerful fear responses — the sight of approaching humans or dogs can trigger panic and severe stress, including capture myopathy (a potentially fatal muscle breakdown syndrome). Farmed deer management must account for this fundamental aspect of their nature. Low-stress handling systems, quiet and calm approaches, and minimising the frequency of human contact are welfare priorities. On-farm slaughter by a skilled marksman while deer are undisturbed grazing may be the most humane endpoint for farmed deer and should be encouraged over live transport.
