The density at which fish are held in aquaculture has profound effects on their welfare, health outcomes, and behaviour. Evidence-based stocking density limits are a key welfare tool.
Stocking density affects fish welfare through multiple pathways: high densities impair water quality (oxygen depletion, waste accumulation), reduce the ability of subordinate fish to escape aggression, prevent normal swimming behaviour, and increase transmission of parasites and disease. The relationship between density and welfare is not always linear — very low densities can cause stress in some social species — but for intensively farmed species like salmon and trout, the direction of welfare improvement is consistently toward lower densities. Economic pressure to maximise production per cubic metre of water is the primary driver of overcrowding.
