The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — guides the ethical use of animals in research. Progress on all three dimensions is essential to improving the welfare of millions of research animals.
Laboratory animals experience pain, distress, and suffering in the service of medical and scientific research. The moral justification for this is the benefit to human and animal health that research produces, but this justification is contingent on the harm being minimised. The 3Rs provide a framework for this minimisation: Replace (use non-animal methods wherever possible), Reduce (use the fewest animals necessary to obtain valid results), and Refine (use methods that minimise suffering). Progress on all three requires investment in alternative methods, better experimental design, and genuine commitment from researchers and funders to welfare as a priority.
