Water quality is a foundational determinant of fish welfare in aquaculture. Dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and waste accumulation all profoundly affect fish health and wellbeing.
Fish live in water — its quality determines the quality of their environment in a way that has no equivalent for terrestrial animals. Poor water quality causes direct physiological harm: hypoxia (low oxygen) impairs respiration and exercise capacity; ammonia damages gill tissue and impairs osmoregulation; extreme pH causes acidosis or alkalosis. These are not merely discomforts but genuine welfare harms. Intensive aquaculture systems that allow water quality to degrade through overcrowding or inadequate treatment impose chronic suffering on fish. Monitoring water quality and maintaining appropriate parameters is the most fundamental welfare management practice in fish farming.
