Farmed salmon escapes have welfare dimensions at multiple levels. The escaped fish themselves face disorientation, unfamiliar predators, and inability to find food efficiently — most die within weeks. The interaction with wild salmon populations includes disease and parasite transmission and genetic introgression that reduces wild salmon fitness over generations. This represents a form of welfare harm cascading from the aquaculture system to wild fish populations. Prevention through net integrity, acoustic monitoring, and site management is the primary welfare and conservation intervention.
