Water is the most critical nutrient for cattle welfare. Inadequate access to clean water impairs health, production, and welfare within hours.
Water deprivation is among the most rapidly welfare-compromising management failures possible in livestock farming. Cattle deprived of adequate water become lethargic, stop eating, and show physiological signs of dehydration within hours. Dairy cows, with their high water requirements for milk production, are particularly sensitive. Adequate trough space is as important as water availability — if trough space prevents simultaneous access for all animals, subordinate cattle may be denied drinking access during peak periods. The welfare-conscious stockperson checks water provision as the first task of every visit.
