Welfare Considerations

Puppy farming causes welfare harm at two levels: the breeding bitches themselves, who may spend their entire productive lives in isolated, unstimulating kennels with minimal human interaction; and the puppies they produce, who suffer from inadequate socialisation, immune challenges, and the health consequences of poor husbandry in their first critical weeks. The welfare harm extends beyond the farm: poorly socialised puppies develop into fearful, anxious adult dogs that suffer chronic stress throughout their lives. Lucy's Law addressed one distribution pathway, but online direct sales allow puppy farms to continue operating by presenting themselves as home breeders.

What You Can Do

Always visit puppies in their home environment with their mother before purchasing
Do not accept home visits at a different location from where the puppy was born
Never purchase a puppy that cannot be seen with its mother in normal living conditions
Report suspected puppy farming operations to the local authority
Support campaigns for mandatory breeding dog registration and inspection
