Welfare Considerations

Feline panleukopaenia causes one of the most distressing deaths of any companion animal disease — severe haemorrhagic diarrhoea, bone marrow failure, and neurological disease in a kitten that may have been healthy days before. The speed of progression and the severity of suffering make this disease particularly welfare-significant. The welfare case for vaccination is absolute: core vaccination is safe, effective, affordable, and provides essentially complete protection. Unvaccinated cats in rescue settings are at particular risk given the environmental persistence of the virus and the likelihood of contact with infected individuals.
