Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is common in outdoor cats and affects immune function. With appropriate management, FIV-positive cats can have good quality of life for many years.
FIV infection does not mean a poor quality of life or short lifespan for affected cats with appropriate management. FIV-positive cats that are neutered, housed appropriately, fed well, and receive regular veterinary monitoring can live healthy lives for many years before immune deficiency causes significant health problems. The welfare approach to FIV management involves regular veterinary screening, prompt treatment of any infections (which may be more severe in immune-compromised cats), appropriate housing to prevent transmission and further infection, and honest quality-of-life assessment as the disease progresses. FIV-positive cats are excellent candidates for adoption by informed, committed owners.
