Brown hares are a native UK species under significant pressure from habitat loss and historically from hare coursing, now banned in England and Scotland.
Both legal hunting history and continuing illegal coursing cause direct welfare harm through injury, stress, and death. Even non-lethal chasing causes intense fear and physiological stress. Enforcing the coursing ban, alongside habitat restoration through agri-environment schemes, are the priority welfare interventions for this species.
