The current dominant commercial broiler is arguably one of the worst examples of welfare compromise through selective breeding. Birds are essentially growing too fast for their bodies to support. The European Better Chicken Commitment advocates slower-growing breeds, higher welfare environments, and stunning before slaughter as the minimum welfare improvement package.
