Octopuses are increasingly recognised as highly sentient creatures, making plans to farm them commercially particularly concerning from a welfare perspective.
Farming octopuses at commercial scale would mean keeping solitary, highly intelligent animals in conditions preventing their normal complex behaviours. They cannot be maintained humanely in close proximity. The feed conversion ratio using wild fish is poor. Welfare scientists have called for a moratorium on octopus farming until minimum welfare standards can even theoretically be defined.
