Recognising pain in livestock is a core skill for farmers and vets, yet under-diagnosis and under-treatment of pain remain widespread in commercial farming.
Under-treatment of pain in livestock causes unnecessary suffering and economic losses. Training farmers to use validated assessment tools including facial grimace scales dramatically improves pain recognition. Routine provision of analgesics for known painful procedures including castration, dehorning, and difficult calvings should be standard practice rather than the exception.
