Environmental enrichment in zoos aims to promote natural behaviours and reduce stereotypic behaviour, but quality and consistency vary enormously between institutions.
Enrichment is not a luxury but a welfare necessity for captive animals whose natural behavioural repertoire cannot be fully expressed. Well-designed enrichment programmes that consider the specific behavioural needs of each species significantly reduce stereotypic behaviour and improve welfare indicators. Enrichment that merely occupies animals briefly without providing genuine cognitive or physical engagement does not meet this standard.
