Intensive genetic selection for single production traits has created farm animals with bodies that are poorly adapted for the demands placed on them, including Holstein cows with metabolic disease susceptibility and commercial broilers that cannot support their own weight. Maintaining rare breed diversity provides a genetic resource for breeding programmes that can recover welfare-relevant traits lost through commercial selection.
