Early weaning of piglets in intensive systems causes acute welfare harm from maternal separation, abrupt dietary change, and social disruption.
Early weaning causes acute distress from maternal separation at a developmental stage when piglets are physiologically and psychologically dependent. The behavioural distress response is clear and prolonged. Later weaning age reduces welfare harm while improving health outcomes. Providing enriched weaning environments with environmental complexity and access to solid food during the suckling phase facilitates the dietary transition and reduces post-weaning welfare problems.
