The environment in which piglets are born and raised during the first weeks of life determines behavioural development and welfare throughout their lives.
Early life environment has permanent effects on pig welfare beyond the immediate period. Piglets raised in enriched environments with behavioural opportunities show better welfare indicators throughout their lives compared to those raised in barren farrowing crates. Investing in enrichment during the suckling period is a low-cost, high-return welfare intervention. Providing rooting material and positive early experiences with humans reduces fear responses in adult pigs.
