Farmer mental health and wellbeing directly affects the quality of animal care they provide, making farmer welfare an animal welfare concern.
The welfare of farm animals depends on the wellbeing of the farmers who care for them. Farmers experiencing mental health crisis, burnout, or financial desperation cannot consistently provide the attentive, engaged stockmanship that good animal welfare requires. Supporting farmer mental health through fair food prices, reduced regulatory burden, and mental health services is simultaneously an animal welfare intervention. The connection between farmer and animal welfare deserves explicit recognition in welfare policy.
