Signal crayfish killed in control programs experience acute suffering from trapping and killing methods. Evidence suggests crayfish have pain-relevant neural processing and show avoidance behaviours in response to noxious stimuli. However, the ongoing suffering caused to native species and riparian ecosystems by unmanaged signal crayfish populations must be weighed against control welfare costs. Novel biocontrol methods that avoid individual killing are being researched. The ethical complexity of invasive species welfare management is particularly acute for neurologically capable invertebrates.
