Recirculating aquaculture systems offer both opportunities and risks for fish welfare. The ability to precisely control temperature, oxygen, and water chemistry can support excellent welfare conditions. However, economic pressure to maximise stocking density often overrides welfare considerations. At high densities, fish experience chronic social stress, increased disease pressure, and reduced access to food. Welfare-conscious RAS operators set density limits based on fish behaviour and physiological indicators rather than purely on water quality metrics.
