Flow-through trout systems offer better environmental control than some aquaculture methods but still present welfare challenges at high stocking densities. Crowded conditions increase aggression, reduce access to food, and impair swimming behaviour. Water quality deteriorates along the length of a raceway, meaning fish at the downstream end experience lower oxygen and higher ammonia than those upstream. Welfare monitoring in trout farms should include assessment of fin erosion, eye condition, and feed conversion efficiency as proxy indicators of fish welfare.
