Donkeys are among the most widespread working animals globally, with an estimated 44 million used in agriculture, transport, and tourism, often in conditions that cause chronic suffering.
Working donkeys endure some of the most severe and chronic welfare problems of any domesticated animal. Wounds from ill-fitting harnesses left untreated, lameness from overgrown hooves, and exhaustion from excessive loading are endemic in many regions where donkeys work. Cultural perceptions of donkeys as less sensitive than horses compound the problem. The donkey skin trade has added commercial slaughter pressure on top of working welfare concerns. Organisations including the Donkey Sanctuary work directly with communities to provide veterinary training and welfare improvements at scale.
