Loading-related welfare harm operates at two levels: the acute stress and physical injury risk of forced loading, and the chronic transport anxiety of horses that have never been properly trained. Horses forced into trailers using excessive pressure experience significant fear and may injure themselves or handlers. Positive reinforcement loading, where horses are rewarded for approaching and entering the trailer in a step-by-step progression, produces willing loaders that load without conflict and travel more calmly. Proper trailer design with good light, ventilation, and secure chest and breeching bars also reduces in-transit injury risk.
