Snuffles - a complex of upper respiratory infections primarily caused by Pasteurella multocida - is endemic in many domestic rabbit populations and causes chronic suffering that is frequently undertreated.
Rabbits with chronic snuffles experience persistent discomfort from nasal congestion, reduced ability to engage in natural behaviours, and recurrent infections that flare with any stress or illness. Because rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, significant upper respiratory obstruction is distressing and impairs normal behaviour including eating and grooming. The stoic nature of rabbits means chronic low-level suffering from snuffles is easily missed by owners who interpret a rabbit eating and moving as a rabbit that is well. Regular veterinary assessment and antibiotic treatment during flare-ups improves quality of life significantly.
