Farmed Shrimp Welfare Standards

Shrimp are among the most numerous farmed animals globally, yet welfare standards in their production are almost non-existent despite growing evidence of sentience.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Shrimp have nociceptors and behavioural responses consistent with pain experience. Eyestalk ablation causes documented distress and is performed without anaesthetic. High stocking densities lead to elevated aggression, injury and disease. Handling and slaughter methods are rarely designed to minimise suffering.
