Feather destructive behaviour (FDB) in parrots and other companion birds is a complex welfare problem often indicating psychological distress, chronic pain or infectious disease.
Parrots engaging in FDB are experiencing significant welfare compromise. The behaviour itself may be self-reinforcing but typically indicates an underlying negative state. Chronically under-stimulated parrots in small cages with limited social interaction develop psychological states analogous to depression. Treatment is complex and rarely completely successful; prevention through appropriate housing and social provision is far superior.
