Aquaculture certification schemes vary enormously in their welfare requirements, and consumers face significant challenges in identifying products with meaningful welfare standards.
The proliferation of certification marks creates confusion for consumers attempting to make welfare-conscious choices. Standards that focus primarily on environmental sustainability may say nothing about fish pain, slaughter method or stocking density. Greenwashing through certification is a significant risk in aquaculture. Independent welfare-focused assessment is needed across the industry.
