Wild parrots spend 4-8 hours daily foraging, and companion parrots denied this opportunity develop boredom, frustration and behavioural problems that are entirely preventable.
Chronically bored parrots develop stereotypic behaviours including repetitive calling, regurgitation, feather destruction and aggression. These behaviours are indicators of significant negative welfare states. Parrots deprived of foraging opportunity and social interaction develop psychological states analogous to depression. Foraging enrichment is one of the highest-impact welfare interventions for companion parrots.
