Water voles have suffered the fastest decline of any UK mammal species, losing 90% of their population since the 1970s due to mink predation and habitat loss.
Water voles living in mink-exposed habitats exist under constant predation pressure that affects normal behaviour including foraging and reproduction. Mink can pursue voles underwater into their burrows, making the entire burrow system unsafe. Water voles in high-mink-density areas show elevated stress markers and reduced reproductive success. The species requires both habitat and sustained mink management to recover welfare at population level.
