Periodontal disease is the most common health problem in companion dogs and cats, and daily tooth brushing is the single most effective preventive measure, yet is practised by fewer than 5% of pet owners.
Animals with untreated dental disease live with chronic oral pain that affects eating, social behaviour and quality of life. Fractured and abscessed teeth cause acute severe pain. Bacteria from periodontal disease enter the bloodstream causing systemic inflammation. Yet many owners never examine their pets' mouths and vets diagnose dental disease at check-ups that could have been prevented with daily home care.
