Welfare Considerations

Ferrets confined to small cages without adequate exercise space develop obesity, stereotypic pacing, and muscle weakness from insufficient movement. Social isolation causes chronic stress in a species that naturally lives in small groups. Commercial pellet diets lacking in animal protein cause adrenal and other metabolic diseases. Ferrets that escape from inadequate housing may be lost and face severe welfare risks. The high activity needs of ferrets make them inappropriate pets for owners unable to provide supervised free-roaming time daily.

Provide ferrets with multiple square metres of living space and hours of free-roaming time
Keep ferrets in pairs or small groups where possible
Feed a prey-based or raw meat diet appropriate for obligate carnivores
