Wild Bee Hotel Design and Effectiveness

Solitary bee hotels can provide nesting habitat for cavity-nesting bees, but poorly designed products are ineffective or actively harmful, and natural habitat creation is more beneficial.

Welfare Considerations

What You Can Do

Choose bee hotels with bamboo tubes of 6-10mm diameter and minimum 15cm depth
Replace bee hotel fillings annually to prevent parasite accumulation
Create south-facing bare earth patches for ground-nesting bee species
Plant native spring-flowering plants including willow, blackthorn and cherry
