Welfare Considerations

Natterjack toad tadpoles are extremely sensitive to pool drying and pollution. Pools that dry before metamorphosis is complete kill entire year classes. Invasive vegetation shades breeding pools, reducing water temperature below optimal for larval development. Predation from introduced species including smooth newts competing for food resources reduces tadpole survival. Active pool management directly determines whether individual breeding attempts succeed.
