Parrots have cognitive abilities comparable to a 5-year-old child and require complex cognitive stimulation that most pet environments fail to provide, leading to behavioural problems and welfare compromise.
Cognitively complex parrots deprived of adequate mental stimulation develop the avian equivalent of learned helplessness, characterised by reduced curiosity, stereotypic behaviour and depression-like states. The mismatch between parrot cognitive capacity and typical pet environments is enormous. Owners who treat parrots as decorative animals rather than cognitively demanding companions create chronic welfare failure regardless of physical care quality.
