Early detection technologies reduce the period between welfare problem onset and treatment, directly reducing the duration of individual animal suffering. Manual welfare assessment is limited by time and requires trained human observers; automated monitoring provides continuous 24-hour surveillance at scale. However, technology supplements rather than replaces good stockpersonship, and alert-only systems require responsive human action to deliver welfare benefits.
