Rabbits are one of the least regulated farmed species despite welfare needs that are poorly met in conventional cage systems.
Rabbits have complex needs including space to run and jump, hiding areas, social contact and appropriate flooring. Wire-floor cages cause foot sores and prevent normal locomotion. Colony systems address many of these concerns but need disease management protocols. The welfare gap between conventional and enriched systems is significant.
