Thousands of albatrosses, petrels and other seabirds are killed annually by longline fishing hooks, threatening some of the world oldest-living birds.
Seabirds hooked on longlines experience drowning, struggling and physical injury. Death may be prolonged. Many species form lifelong pair bonds and raise single chicks over long breeding seasons, meaning each death has significant population impact. Mitigation measures save birds immediately when deployed.
