Welfare Considerations

Seals are particularly vulnerable to disturbance during pupping and moulting seasons. Abandoned pups face starvation and hypothermia. Stampedes caused by people or off-lead dogs have killed and injured pups at multiple UK sites. Even without acute incidents, chronic disturbance elevates stress hormones and reduces reproductive success. Responsible wildlife watching requires maintaining appropriate distance without causing behavioural change.

What You Can Do

Stay at least 100m from seal colonies, especially during pupping season (October-January)
Keep dogs on leads near all coastal wildlife areas
Report seal disturbance and injured seals to the BDMLR or SSPCA
