The catching and loading of chickens for transport to slaughter is a high-risk welfare point causing injury, fear and distress on a massive scale.
Catching broiler chickens is inherently stressful due to handling, inverted carrying, and the novel experience of being captured. Fractures, dislocations and internal haemorrhage occur during manual catching. Mechanical harvesters move more slowly and cause fewer acute injuries in some systems but require careful calibration. Reducing stocking density and improving shed design can reduce injury rates. The welfare of catching staff is also significant given the physical demands of the work.
