Working donkeys are often essential to the livelihoods of poor families in Asia and Africa, making simple condemnation of their use inadequate. The welfare focus is on improving working conditions: appropriate loads, regular rest, clean water, adequate food, harness fitting, and basic veterinary care. Donkeys in good condition live and work longer, benefiting both animal welfare and their owners. The Donkey Sanctuary model of working with owners rather than removing animals is highly effective.
