Fear of fireworks and thunderstorms affects a significant proportion of dogs, causing acute suffering that can be substantially reduced through preparation and treatment.
Dogs experiencing severe noise phobia during fireworks suffer acutely. Cortisol levels rise sharply, heart rate and respiratory rate increase, and dogs may injure themselves attempting to escape. Repeated exposure without treatment sensitises dogs to noise, worsening the problem over time. Early intervention through systematic desensitisation, pheromone products, and veterinary medication significantly reduces suffering. Waiting for the dog to grow out of it rarely works without active management.
