Adequate clean water is a fundamental welfare requirement for all livestock, yet water provision is frequently insufficient, particularly during hot weather and in extensive systems.
Water deprivation causes rapid physiological deterioration in livestock. Even mild dehydration reduces productivity and immune function. Contaminated troughs cause disease outbreaks. Cattle at pasture may not access water adequately if troughs are too few, poorly positioned, or socially dominated by dominant individuals. These problems are easy to identify and correct but require attentive stockmanship. Automated monitoring systems can alert to trough failures in modern dairy systems.
