Rooting is a fundamental feeding and exploratory behaviour in pigs that is almost entirely frustrated in conventional indoor systems, causing chronic behavioural frustration.
Rooting is not merely a feeding behaviour but a core expression of pig identity and motivation. Pigs deprived of rooting substrate direct rooting movements toward pen fixtures, other pigs, and the floor in repetitive patterns that indicate frustration. This misdirected behaviour contributes to tail biting and ear biting outbreaks. Straw, compost, and deep litter systems allow natural rooting and dramatically reduce aggressive behaviours, representing one of the most cost-effective welfare interventions available.
