Habitat fragmentation has direct welfare consequences for individual animals: hedgehogs unable to access sufficient foraging territory lose condition and face starvation; otters and badgers attempting to cross roads face death or injury; small mammals isolated in habitat patches face inbreeding depression and increased disease susceptibility. Wildlife corridors address these welfare problems at a landscape scale. Their design benefits from ecological science, but the welfare arguments for connectivity are as compelling as the conservation arguments.
