Farmed ducks are semi-aquatic birds with strong motivations to access water for bathing and swimming that are frequently frustrated in commercial production systems.
Duck welfare in commercial production is strongly affected by water access. Ducks are phylogenetically and behaviourally adapted to aquatic environments — their waterproof feathers, preening glands, and sensory systems all reflect this. Frustrating the motivation to bathe, swim, and immerse the head causes chronic welfare compromise that is evident in behavioural indicators including redirected bathing movements and bill-wiping on bedding. Provision of even minimal open water access — troughs, showers — substantially improves welfare without transforming production systems.
